Why Is It So Rare for Movie Sequels to Surpass the Original Film?

When a movie becomes successful, a sequel often feels inevitable. But while some sequels expand the story and become classics themselves, many struggle to capture the same magic as the original. Part of the problem may be expectations. The first movie gets to surprise us, introduce the characters, and establish the world. By the time the sequel arrives, audiences already know what to expect, and filmmakers have to find a way to make the story feel fresh without losing what people loved. What's your take on this?

Sequels are very hard because the first movie has already set the bar. The reason is that the expectations of people are very high and filmmakers will be under pressure to do magic.

Sequels are good when the developers invest more in it. I know so many of them that I've watched and enjoyed. Although, some of them are trash to be very honest.

That’s because people’s expectations rise and the squeal hardly fulfills that expectations. Most of the time sequels are made just to make money because they already have a formula that can become successful

Honestly I find myself mainly enjoying sequels over the first films in many different movie franchises. For example Final Destination 2 is much better than the first one. I thought the deaths were much more interesting in the sequel compared to the first movie. Additionally I thought Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3 were way better than the first Sonic film since they followed the story of the games more than the first movie did.

That’s a good question—I don’t know for sure. I gather it’s because many sequels were made simply to milk the fame and profits of the original, rather than as creative works designed to captivate audiences the way the first film did. For the first one, they had to build everything from scratch, whereas with the second, it looks like they didn't put much thought into it and just did it to cash in on the original's success.
